Learning at home one-pager: School age (7-10 years)

A nine-year-old quizzes herself with flashcards at a desk while a parent passes in the hallway with laundry.

Every day

  • Homework at the same time and place, with you nearby.
  • Study by quizzing: cover it, recall it, check it.
  • Practice a little on several days, not all at once.
  • Read for fun every day, from books your child chooses.
  • Ask what your child learned, not only what they scored.
  • Sleep: 9-12 hours a day.123

Things to talk about

  • What did you try? What could you try next?
  • Close the book. What can you remember?
  • Which subject do you want to start with?
  • You found a better way to do that.

Go easy on

  • Doing homework for your child or fixing every mistake.
  • “You’re so smart” as your main praise.
  • Paying for reading or for things your child already enjoys.
  • Screens and phones close to bedtime.117
